The Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras After-Party has been cancelled for 2022 due to lingering covid concerns. In a statement released on January 20, organisers expressed their regrets but feel the event poses too great a health risk amid worries over the scale and nature of the event.

IT’S YOUR PARTY AND YOU CAN CRY IF YOU WANT TO

Although many are expressing their disappointment, Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras will still presenting Fair Day and The Parade. Fair Day is set for Sunday, February 20 and the Parade will be on Saturday, March 5.

“The nature of this event being mostly indoors with dancing, plus with an attendance of more than 10,000 people means it is high risk for COVID transmission,” reads the statement regarding the Party.

Considering the circumstances, Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras is ensuring to give ample notice so that would-be attendees have time to reconfigure their plans. Ticket-holders will be refunded automatically by Ticketek.

“Most of our [other] events are outdoor and/or seated, meaning they fit under the New South Wales Health Order and are deemed lower risk,” says Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras organisers. “We will continue working with NSW Health to ensure that all the remaining exciting Festival events fall within current covid-safety guidelines.”

As expected, there is a mixed-bag of responses to the news but overwhelmingly reactions have been supportive.

Ticket-holders are being offered full refunds for the event.
