Sydney Mardi Gras Raises $440,000 And Eyes A Stronger Year-Round Future

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras says it has raised about $440,000 through new fundraising efforts linked to the 2026 festival, a result the organisation is framing as a strong sign of support for its future.

In a media brief, Mardi Gras says the total includes $93,000 from the first Mardi Gala Ball, $320,000 in corporate giving, and additional support from individual donors. Mardi Gras is a registered charity, and its official donation page says donations over $2 are tax-deductible.

Mardi Gras began in 1978, the 2026 parade marked its 48th anniversary, and the organisation is already building toward its 50th in 2028. The new Mardi Gala Ball was launched as part of that push, with Coles named as the presenting partner on the official event page.

The timing matters for another reason. Recent reporting shows Mardi Gras has been dealing with financial strain, including the cancellation of its 2026 official party after losses and broader instability.

Against that backdrop, a bigger donations drive feels less like a nice extra and more like part of the recovery plan. As chief executive officer (CEO) Jesse Matheson put it in the statement, “Mardi Gras belongs to community.”

According to the brief, the money is already helping fund community engagement across metropolitan and regional areas, accessibility and inclusion work at festival events, volunteer recruitment and training, partnerships with health, advocacy and cultural groups, and planning ahead of the 2028 milestone.

That fits with Mardi Gras’ public donation messaging, which highlights support for free events, LGBTQIA+ arts practice, regional and remote participation, and accessibility initiatives.

That last point matters. When people hear “fundraising”, they often think about one big night. Mardi Gras is clearly trying to shift that thinking. The case being made here is about year-round community value, not only parade-night visibility.

The next target is already in sight

Mardi Gras says it now wants to reach $550,000 before the end of the financial year, with recurring donations central to that push. If supporters want Mardi Gras to stay community-led, visible and stable ahead of 2028, regular giving is being framed as one practical way to help make that happen.
