On September 29, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed Senate Bill No 107 which effectively prevents other states from prosecuting trans youth for seeking gender-affirming care, reports Them.

CALIFORNIA IS A SANCTUARY STATE

Anti-trans legislation perpetuates the idea that gender-affirming care is harmful to children. The crux of this argument forms the foundation for many US states banning transgender youth from accessing care that has been proven to be life-saving.

States such Texas banned trans youth from accessing gender-affirming care and tried to investigate parents who sought the care for their children. Idaho has made it illegal for medical practitioners to provide gender-affirming care and has created penalties for any individual aiding transgender youth in crossing state lines to seek care.

California signing SB 107 makes it the only sanctuary in the US where trans youth and their families can’t be prosecuted by other states for seeking gender-affirming care. Senator Scott Weiner was the first to introduce the legislation and upon the approval of SB 107, Weiner tweeted saying, “States like Texas and Alabama are seeking to tear these families apart. California won’t be party to it. We have your backs.”
