British PM Rishi Sunak Wants Trans Rights Removed From The Equality Act
The new UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reportedly intends to review the Equality Act of 2010 in regards to which groups have legal protections against discrimination, reports The Telegraph, and this could be bad news for trans rights.
SUNAK’S REVIEW WANTS SEX TO BE DEFINED AS EXCLUSIVELY BIOLOGICAL
LGBTQIA+ activists are raising concerns that Prime Minister Sunak’s recent comments about the Equality Act could mean a review would challenge and dismantle long-held rights and protections for trans individuals, reports The Telegraph.
Mr Sunak’s reformation of sex education, which eliminates many avenues for discussing gender identity, is being taken as a red flag by many progressives. According to PinkNews, the PM delivered a speech earlier this year in July saying: “Too often, existing legislation is used to engage in social engineering to which no one has given consent. The worst offender in this regard is the 2010 Equality Act, conceived in the dog days of the last Labour government.”
In the review, Mr Sunak intends to define the language around “sex” to clarify it extends to biological sex rather than gender. This would mean many rights enjoyed by trans people such as access to gender-exclusive spaces and sports would be at risk. Furthermore, trans and gender fluid folks would not longer have the power to identify on their own autonomy.
“It [Equality Act] has been a Trojan horse that has allowed every kind of woke nonsense to permeate public life,” says Sunak. “It must stop. My government would review the act to ensure we keep legitimate protections while stopping mission creep.”
