Netflix’s Bridgerton series has been one of the most successful period dramas since Downton Abbey. Author of the book series, Julia Quinn revealed in an interview that she can see the series getting an LGBTQIA+ protagonist, reports Instinct.

BRIDGERTON HAS BEEN WONDERFUL FOR DIVERSE POC

Although Bridgerton is set in Regency era Britain, the show has done a wonderful job at representing POC. Despite this anachronism, the show is yet to feature any LGBTQIA+ characters. The series on Netflix derives its content from the book series written by Quinn; each book follows the romantic endeavours of one of the seven Bridgerton children.

Thus far, we have seen the stories of Daphne and Anthony (played respectively by Phoebe Dynevor and Jonathan Bailey) which hopefully leaves five more seasons worth of content to include some queer representation. In an interview with Cosmopolitan Spain, Quinn mentions how thrilled she would be with the idea of an LGBTQIA+ protagonist.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all, but I don’t know anything about whether they’re going to do it. I’m not part of the writing process for the series. I’m just a consultant,” says Quinn. “It would be great if there was an [LGBTQIA+] protagonist.”

The desire to see queer characters on screen is shared by audiences as well as Quinn. Fans are vocal online about theories on which of the Bridgerton siblings are potentially queer – so far the general consensus has landed on Benedict and Eloise being LGBTQIA+.
