Forget your usual political dramas!

A new mystery has landed on Netflix and it is set in a very famous house: the White House. The Residence mixes a whodunnit story with a look inside the lives of the people who work and live there.

A Deadly Dinner and a Detective

What happens when a state dinner goes wrong? In this eight-part series, someone ends up dead. Detective Cordelia Cupp, played by Uzo Aduba, arrives to solve the mystery. But the show is not just about the crime. We also see the political games and the everyday chaos that happens behind the scenes.

Meet the First Couple

At the heart of this story is the President of the United States, Perry Morgan, played by Paul Fitzgerald. And his husband, the First Gentleman, Elliott Morgan, is played by Barrett Foa. This is a first for television, showing a gay couple in the White House.

Fitzgerald spoke about this in an interview with Gayety. He said, “They wanted it grounded in reality. Probably TV’s first gay president, but that is not foregrounded in any important way other than the fact that it’s just a reality. And I loved that.” This shows how the show treats their relationship as normal.

Normalising Love and Leadership

For Barrett Foa, this role means a lot. “I love that I am part of one half of maybe the first queer presidency on television,” he said. “I’m queer and the guy playing the president is queer. So in real life, we have that great representation. It’s such a cool time for this to happen.”

The show does not make a big deal about the fact that the President and the First Gentleman are gay. Their marriage is part of the story, but it is not the main focus. As Foa put it, “No one’s like, ‘Let’s talk about how these people are gay.’ You’re just like, no, that’s the setup of the show. And there’s something so natural about that. It doesn’t have to be a thing.”

Representation Matters On and Off Screen

The people who made The Residence also made sure that the cast and crew were diverse. Fitzgerald noted, “I’ve never seen a more organic representation of the way the world looks. In front of the camera and behind the camera… they have made the world on television look like the world looks.”

The show comes from the minds of Paul William Davies and Shonda Rhimes. Other important people behind the scenes include Betsy Beers and directors Liza Johnson and Jaffar Mahmood. It seems The Residence is not just talking about showing different kinds of people; it is actually doing it.

A Mix of Mystery and More

If you like shows like Knives OutThe West Wing, and Clue, then The Residence might be for you. Imagine these shows had a baby in a world where the President has a husband and Kylie Minogue might just pop up at a fancy dinner. That’s what you get. Come for the mystery of who did it, stay for the queer joy and the drama among the White House staff.

You can watch The Residence now on Netflix.
