Can The Man Who Broke Our Hearts In “Call Me By Your Name” Make A Come Back?

Armie Hammer and Timothée Chalamet in Call Me by Your Name (Sony Pictures)

Armie Hammer is ready to make his return to the big screen. After a three-year hiatus from acting, the Call Me By Your Name star has announced his role in an upcoming western. This news comes just days after he revealed plans for a new podcast. Both projects seem to be part of Hammer’s attempt to rebuild his career after facing serious allegations that shook his personal and professional life.

Feeding the Rumours

Hammer’s podcast announcement raised eyebrows. The show’s blurb reads: “Don’t worry… we feed him before every episode,” a clear nod to the disturbing allegations that surfaced in 2021. The podcast seems to be Hammer’s way of addressing – or perhaps deflecting – the controversy that has followed him for years.

What Happened in 2021?

In early 2021, multiple women came forward accusing Hammer of sexual abuse. His ex-girlfriend, Efrosina Angelova, made the most public accusation, claiming he raped her in April 2017. At a press conference, Angelova said she feared for her life during the incident, describing how Hammer allegedly slammed her head against a wall and beat her feet so badly she struggled to walk.

Hammer’s legal team was quick to deny the claims. They described the accusations as “outrageous” and insisted that all of Hammer’s sexual encounters were consensual and mutually agreed upon.

The Instagram Scandal

Before Angelova went public with her allegations, anonymous screenshots appeared on Instagram under the account “House of Effie.” These messages allegedly showed conversations between Hammer and various women where he discussed graphic fantasies involving cannibalism. In one message, he supposedly asked to “cut off one of your toes and keep it with me in my pocket.” In another, he allegedly described himself as “100 per cent a cannibal.”

Hammer called these claims “bullshit” and stepped away from his role in Shotgun Wedding shortly after they surfaced.

More Voices Speak Out

The allegations didn’t stop there. Two other ex-girlfriends also shared their experiences with Hammer. Courtney Vucekovich alleged in Page Six that Hammer once said he wanted to “break my rib and barbecue and eat it.” Paige Lorenze claimed that Hammer branded her with a knife and left bruises on her body during their relationship.

Despite these shocking accusations, Hammer’s lawyers continued to maintain that all of his relationships were consensual.

Can He Make a Comeback?

Now back in Los Angeles after spending time in the Cayman Islands, Hammer seems determined to reclaim his place in Hollywood. But can he? With a new movie role and a podcast on the way, it looks like Hammer is betting on time – and perhaps humour – to help him move past the scandal. Whether audiences are ready to welcome him back remains to be seen.
