Zayn Malik recently went on the podcast Call Her Daddy where he discussed multiple different subjects including his departure from One Direction and how fatherhood helped him with his anxiety.

We are revelling in this rare opportunity to get to know more about the elusive zaddy that captured our hearts as a young man and has kept them ever since.

Pulling back the curtain on the mysterious singer

Zayn Malik was the first one to leave One Direction in 2015, which ultimately signalled the end for the boy band. Fans weren’t offered much by way of an explanation, but that has since changed as the other members launched their solo careers. Malik has been one of the quietest singers since the split but has given a rare interview with Alexandra Cooper where he opens up about everything.

He reveals that each member of the band were given personality “types” which would act as a marketing ploy. “They just said, ‘Oh yeah, you can be the mysterious one’,” he says. “That wasn’t necessarily my personality type. I know that a lot of people have high energy personalities and it’s just not the way I am.”

On the split, Malik reveals that he might have been the first to leave but he certainly wasn’t the only one thinking about it.

“We’ve been together every day for five years and we got sick of each other,” he tells Cooper. “There was a lot of politics going on. Certain people were doing certain things [and] certain people didn’t want to sign contracts, so I knew something was happening so I just got ahead of the curve. I selfishly wanted to be the first person to make their own record.”

Later during the interview, Malik talks about being a father to daughter Khai. “Anxiety for me, I’ve learnt is a feeling that now has a word. And I feel like, for generations, human beings have felt it and not really been able to put their finger on what it is… but we overcome it,” he tells Cooper. “Since I’ve had my daughter… the main thing in my mind is trying to be a good example for her… I want her to look at me and be like, ‘Yo, my dad’s doing this! He’s the man, he’s cool’.”
