The Aussie icon shares details of a shocking fall that left him hospitalised.
Darren Hayes has been recovering privately after a serious accident at his home last month. The former Savage Garden singer recently took to Instagram to share the confronting details and photos of his injuries, including a metal brace fitted after emergency surgery.
Darren explained that the incident occurred on March 17 this year, a difficult time following the passing of his mother, Judy, just two months earlier. “I’ve been trying to keep it private, but my lengthy recovery period means it’s easier to admit the truth,” he shared online.
Recounting the frightening event, he wrote, “I lost consciousness, I fainted shortly after getting out of bed and collapsed three times, losing consciousness each time.” The fall was incredibly severe. “The blunt force trauma was so severe it snapped my left jawbone in half,” Darren revealed. “I woke up in a pool of blood, terrible pain in the left side of my head, and with nine teeth shattered.”
Thankfully, help arrived quickly. Darren expressed immense gratitude for the medical teams involved. “I’m so lucky I was found and taken to the amazing team at the emergency room of St John’s Providence in Santa Monica, where they acted quickly,” he said. He acknowledged the gravity of the situation, adding, “I could have died if I landed in a different position.”

The cause of the fainting remains unclear, something Darren and his doctors are actively looking into. The accident “was a complete shock,” he admitted. “Prior to the fall, I had been experiencing lightheadedness and fainting spells for a period before this incident.”
He assured fans he is receiving excellent medical attention. “I am under incredible care. I have an amazing cardiologist and oral surgeon. We are trying to work out how and why I have been fainting.” Initial checks have offered some reassurance: “So far my heart is normal, my arteries are normal. I don’t have a brain tumour or anything that could cause the accident.”
Recovery means Darren will be “out of action” for a while, but he remains positive. He identifies himself as “a survivor”. The healing process involves multiple stages. “After my jaw heals it’s a long road to rehabbing my jaw function and then, of course, replacing my shattered teeth,” the singer explained.
Now, almost a month post-surgery, improvement is gradual. “I’m so grateful to be alive, and every day I’m getting stronger. I’m only just starting to feel better,” he shared.
Amidst the ongoing recovery challenges, Darren posted a heartfelt note on Instagram just a couple of days ago. In a message to his partner, he wrote,
“It’s not all bad news. Thank you Heriberto for loving me and taking such care of me during some of the most challenging times in my life. I loved you the first time ever I saw your face.”
This health scare comes after a significant year for Darren, who released his candid memoir, Unlovable, last year. The book, which delves into his Brisbane upbringing and global fame, was dedicated to his late mum. We wish Darren all the best for a full and speedy recovery.
