SPOILERS: Warning for the article to follow, there are spoilers for season two of Good Omens.

The new season of Good Omens finally came out on Amazon Prime after a four-year hiatus. This season almost directly follows the events of the first season but dives deeper into the history of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, played by Michael Sheen and David Tenant respectively.

HOLY HELL!

The finale of the last season saw Aziraphale and Crowley successfully thwart the apocalypse and narrowly avoid punishment from Heaven and Hell. In this universe created by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, Heaven and Hell are two sides of the same coin that are constantly bickering and using somewhat bureaucratic pettiness to exact punishment on each other.

From this dynamic emerges Aziriphale and Crowley, an angel and a demon sent to earth to aid in God’s ineffable plan. Many would say that the crux of the show’s success lies in the two lead actors. Sheen and Tenant embody their characters with exacting charm and palpable on-screen chemistry.

Although it was heavily implied in the first season that the unlikely allies were in love with each other, there was never any kind of physical acknowledgement of this. That’s where season two comes in. By the end of the season, Crowley has begged Aziraphale to run away with him for the second time in the series. When Crowley faces hesitation once more he goes in for a passionate kiss, only to be rejected by Aziraphale.

The moment is one that fans of Good Omens have been longing for. Michael Sheen spoke with IGN about the finale saying that the whole series leads us to understand how immense and complex the relationship between these two celestials is.

“We always knew where they were going to get to at the end of this particular part of the story,” he says. “And I think retrospectively thinking about that, it made it a more, I think, interesting and exciting journey to be able to seed in things all the way along that would mean that endpoint that they get to be as difficult and as satisfying and as challenging and heartbreaking and all the rest of the things that you would want it to be.”

If you are new to Good Omens, it has an excellent supporting cast with Jon Hamm as Gabriel, Benedict Cumberbatch as Satan, and Frances McDormand as God.
