Pet Shop Boys Tease Aussie Fans with Possible Tour, Praise Troye Sivan
The Pet Shop Boys, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, just dropped a major hint about a potential Australian tour. In a chat with The Project, Neil let slip that they’re “in discussions” to come Down Under next year.
It would be their first full-scale Aussie tour since way back in 1994! They’ve made a few appearances since then – Vivid Sydney in 2014, a festival in 2007, and a Sydney NYE show in 2011. But fans have been craving a proper Pet Shop Boys tour for ages.
“Last year, [Troye Sivan’s album] was the pop album I listened to most”
The duo also gave a big shoutout to Aussie singer Troye Sivan. Neil said Sivan’s album Something To Give Each Other was his most-listened pop record last year. High praise from a pop icon!
Neil and Chris also dished on their music being used in two recent films – All Of Us Strangers and Saltburn. They loved how the movies used their songs in meaningful ways, not just as a lazy signal that you’re in a gay club in the ’80s.
In All of Us Strangers, their hit Always On My Mind plays during a powerful family moment. And Saltburn incorporates Rent into the plot.
Nonetheless: Pet Shop Boys’ queer album
Pet Shop Boys have a new album of their own out today, called Nonetheless. They’ve described it as their “queer album,” with singles celebrating LGBTQIA+ stories and emotions.
From the dance tracks to the raw ballads, Neil and Chris say each song contributes to the album’s overall narrative. They worked with producer James Ford to bring new elements to their signature sound.
An Aussie tour would be the perfect way to celebrate this new era of Pet Shop Boys music. Let’s hope those “discussions” lead to some concert dates! In the meantime, we’ll have Nonetheless on repeat.
