Pedro Pascal, Ben Platt and Michael Imperioli Push Back Against Supreme Court’s Anti-Gay Ruling
The Supreme Court of The United States handed down a decision confirming Lorie Smith’s constitutional right to refuse LGBTQIA+ clients on the basis of her religion. This troubles allies and advocates who are concerned that discrimination now has legal footing.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, celebrities and public figures are speaking out against discrimination and anti-gay sentiment on their platforms.
Allyship is needed and appreciated
Prominent LGBTQIA+ celebrities are expressing their anger at the implications of the Supreme Court’s ruling. Ben Platt has spoken to Variety, saying, “I think it’s a distraction from things that are actually important like the planet melting.” Following on, Platt says, “I also think it’s the people who are losing clout, it’s like the last rageful, ‘This is not how it should be!’ before they go away forever.”
It isn’t just queer-identifying folks who are outraged. Pedro Pascal posted his story with trans and Pride flags placed over the justices who voted in Smith’s favour. Actor Michael Imperioli posted on Instagram in support saying that he forbids all bigots and homophobes from watching his shows. “I’ve decided to forbid bigots and homophobes from watching The Sopranos, The White Lotus, Goodfellas or any movie or tv show I’ve been in,” he says.
Politicians have also weighed in with their thoughts. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has called the decision “unconstitutional” and “backward”. President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community and says, “I remain committed to ensuring that everyone has the right to dignity, freedom and liberty.”
