Netflix’s Elite aired first in 2018. No one knew how much one character would change what we see on TV. Omar Ayuso, born in Madrid, played Omar Shanaa. His role spoke to fans all over the world. His work goes beyond acting into making films and standing up for what he believes.

From Madrid Film Student to a Netflix Sensation

Omar Ayuso was born on March 26, 1998, in Madrid, Spain. He grew up in Manzanares el Real. His dad has Moroccan roots, which later linked to his Elite role. Young Ayuso found his love for acting after watching Bad Education (2004).

He studied at Charles III University of Madrid. His focus was on how to make films and TV shows. This study helped him learn both acting and directing skills.

Creating the Iconic Omar Shanaa on Elite

Ayuso first acted in the Spanish show El Continental at age 17. But Elite made him famous. The teen drama about Las Encinas school became a hit worldwide. Fans loved his role as Omar Shanaa.

His on-screen romance with Ander Muñoz (played by Arón Piper) got a special name from fans: “Omander.” This pair won many hearts. By June 2020, Ayuso had over four million social media fans.

Elite ended in July last year after eight seasons. It was Netflix’s longest-running Spanish scripted show. Across all seasons, Ayuso’s acting was praised for feeling true and making an impact.

The Creative Mind Behind the Camera

In 2019, he was in several short films: Maras, Rafagas De Vida Salvaje, and Disseminare. These films showed he could play many types of roles.

In 2020, Spanish singer Rosalía put Ayuso in her music video for Juro Que. This helped show his artistic range.

Most notably, Ayuso moved to the other side of the camera in 2021 with Matar A La Madre. He wrote and directed this project. It showed what he can create when in full control.

Speaking His Truth in the Entertainment World

Ayuso is open about being gay. This shapes both his work and what he stands for. When talking to The Hollywood Reporter about playing a gay Muslim character, he stressed being real: “You have to be honest; you have to start from an honest point, especially if you’re talking about a minority that has been marginalised over time.”

Despite mean comments, Ayuso keeps his voice strong. He thinks people accept his on-screen romance because fiction can be easier to accept than real life.

In a 2021 Vanity Fair Spain talk, Ayuso opened up about his struggles with feeling down and being famous. “No, because I understand myself. I understand what was happening to me,” he said, showing how personal battles helped form who he is.

What Comes Next for Omar?

What makes Ayuso stand out? His true self shows in all his work. On Instagram, where he has over four million fans, this truth shines through. His real friendship with co-star Arón Piper created on-screen magic that viewers felt.

Did you know about his special tattoo? The flame and eye design on his hand comes from Spanish artist Ricardo Cavolo. This shows his love for art outside of films.

Recent work for Ayuso includes his part in 8 Anos, where he acts as David in a story about an eight-year relationship. He also starred in Yo, Adicto in 2024, proving he keeps growing as an actor.

We value how Ayuso brings truth to his roles. His impact on screen creates space for viewers to see parts of themselves. With his acting skills, creative vision, and honest voice, Omar Ayuso remains an important figure in Spanish cinema.
