Nicholas Galitzine Will Be Playing A King’s Gay Lover In “Mary And George”

Nicholas Galitzine in Cinderella (Amazon Prime)

Jumping from one height to another, Red, White And Royal Blue’s Nicholas Galitzine has been cast in another gay role as King James’ gay lover in the AMC production Mary And George, reports Out.

WE LOVE A HISTORICAL GAY ROMANCE

There is a small joke among history buffs that whenever you read that two same-sex historical figures were “close friends” who spent most of their time together, it’s safe to assume they were gay. Think Achilles and Patroclus, Michelangelo and Tommaso dei Cavalieri or Emperor Hadrian and Antinous. In the case of King James I of England and George Villiers, the historical texts state the two were definitely lovers.

George Villiers will be portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine playing across from Julianne Moore as his mother Mary Villiers in Mary And George. From birth, George Villiers was groomed by his mother Mary to seduce the monarch and in doing so, elevate their family status. King James I bestowed many titles and gifts upon his favourite throughout his lifetime and allowed him to make political moves on his behalf in his latter years of life.

Galitzine is no stranger to playing nobility; he was the Prince in Amazon Prime’s Cinderella and is set to play the fictional Prince Henry in Red, White And Royal Blue. George Villiers should be an eerily familiar role for Galitzine; an English nobleman engaged in a gay affair. Mary And George is an eight-part limited series that has already begun filming in the UK and will air sometime later this year.
