NFL’s First Out Active Player Carl Nassib Announces He’s Retiring
On an otherwise unassuming Tuesday afternoon two years ago, NFL player Carl Nassib dropped an Instagram video where he announced that he is gay. This made Carl the first openly gay active NFL player in the league at the time.
After seven seasons on the field, Carl posted an announcement to Instagram letting the world know he’s hanging up his helmet. Although his career as a football star is coming to a close, he says he is excited to move on to the next chapter in his life.

When Carl Nassib came out via Instagram video he made it clear that his priorities in doing so were to help leave a legacy for the following generation of LGBTQIA+ youth. He mentioned his partnership with The Trevor Project at the time and made a donation of USD100,000 to the group for mental health aid for LGBTQIA+ youth.
Since then, Carl has been vocal about his support for the LGBTQIA+ community and has partnered with organisations that support queer youth on numerous occasions. Nassib has also started his own organisation that helps non-profits reach their donors. His platform is called Rayze and Carl speaks about being excited to enter his new chapter with the app.
“This is a bittersweet moment for me but after seven seasons and just over 100 NFL games I am officially retiring from football to concentrate on my company Rayze,” he says. His history raising funds for charity causes close to his heart makes Rayze an ideal company for Carl to launch and transition off of the field.
