Netflix’s “The Boyfriend” Redefines Gay Dating Shows With Heartfelt Sincerity

The Boyfriend (Netflix)

A new Netflix series is changing the game for LGBTQIA+ representation in reality TV. The Boyfriend, Japan’s first same-sex dating show, has captured viewers worldwide with its fresh take on romance.

Set in Tateyama, a coastal city in Japan, The Boyfriend brings together nine young men from various backgrounds. They live in a beach house called The Green Room, looking for love and friendship.

What makes this show stand out? It’s not the usual drama-filled reality TV we’re used to. Instead, it focuses on small, sweet moments. A quick look, a nice picnic, or a letter under a door can spark romance.

The show feels more genuine than other dating formats. The men run a coffee truck and manage their budget together. This helps viewers see them as real people, not just TV characters.

A group of commentators, including actress Megumi and pop star Thelma Aoyama, add humour and insight to the show. They help viewers understand what’s happening and make the show more fun to watch.

TV critic Scott Bryan, host of BBC 5 Live’s Must Watch podcast, believes The Boyfriend‘s success lies in its unique blend of trends. Non-English language shows have gained popularity since Squid Game became Netflix’s most-watched show in 2021. “Watching a show with subtitles makes you more absorbed,” Bryan says. “You can’t scroll on your phone or look at another screen; you have to watch it.”

The show’s production setup also plays a role. The commentators provide narrative cohesion and witty remarks, similar to Married At First Sight. “Having these personalities react instantly makes the show easier to follow and more authentic,” Bryan explains.

In I Kissed a Boy, participants share their deeper emotional feelings. In contrast, Love Island focuses on what happens within the villa. The Boyfriend has a “back to basics” feel. Over 10 episodes, they form deep friendships as much as romantic connections.
