Mayhem, Murder And Men: The Story Of The Chippendales Is Here

(ERIN SIMKIN / HULU)

Chippendales is widely known for sexy men dancing on stages for women à la Magic Mike. The true story of Chippendales is decidedly darker – dangerous ambitions, intimidation and, ultimately, murder.

A new series on Disney+ dives down the rabbit hole of America’s first male strip club. Welcome To Chippendales is the Hulu production that features Kumail Nanjiani and Murray Bartlett as the warring businessmen at the centre of this dark tale, reports PinkNews.

HOW THE STORY UNFOLDS

Although male strippers for a female audience are well accepted now, there was a time when Chippendales broke the mould and created an entire industry based on the female gaze. The first man to dream up the idea was Nick de Noia (played by Murray Bartlett); he visited a gay bar and saw a niche in the market.

After relaying his ideas to businessman Somen ‘Steve’ Banerjee, the duo create The Chippendales. A club built for female pleasure featuring muscly men dancing and stripping. The true crime series draws its inspiration from the book Deadly Dance: The Chippendales Murders, reports PinkNews.

As Nick and Steve’s business relationship begins to breakdown, the two become fierce adversaries. Their battle for dominance over the business takes some very dark roads leading ultimately to gruesome violence and death.

The series premiered on Disney+ on November 22, 2022 with eight episodes in whole. Hulu’s Welcome To Chippendales is a true crime story about the violence of the American dream set against the backdrop of seedy New York City and LA in the ’80s, and it’s punctuated with scenes of hunky men in various states of undress.
