Matt Louis Is The Queer Puerto Rican Pop Star Who Refuses To Play It Safe
Matt Louis is the Black, queer R&B artist from Ponce who is fast becoming one of Puerto Rico’s most talked-about new names. He got there by doing the opposite of playing it safe. Once he stopped softening who he is, the music got better, and people noticed.
From The Projects In Ponce To Billboard’s Radar
Louis grew up in the Residencial Dr. Pila housing projects and the Los Caobos neighbourhood in Ponce, the cultural city on the island’s south coast. He trained in jazz and classical music, studied marketing, and paid the bills as a photographer, shooting and touring with Álvaro Díaz, Tainy, and Jhayco before stepping out front himself.
This year, Billboard named him one of its 2026 Pride Month Latin LGBTQIA+ artists to watch.
Early on, Louis kept his lyrics gender-neutral, telling himself it made the songs more relatable. By late 2023, he changed his mind. He started naming his queerness plainly, in the words and in the visuals. “I’m Black and gay, that’s too much for some people,” he told Remezcla.
“As soon as I pushed those thoughts out, suddenly my project started to feel more genuine.” He credits a late-night chat at a Río Piedras bar for the shift.
His debut album, GAMMA, is a 10-track record that pulls R&B, soul, house and Caribbean rhythms into one place, with a feature from RaiNao and production from William Ross. Ponce runs through it. Louis grew up around the plena and bomba traditions of the San Antón neighbourhood, and he folds that heritage into what he calls Afrofuturism through a Caribbean lens.
He is just as deliberate about his body and his softness. “I love the idea of people seeing such a masculine body being so comfortable with my femininity,” he told Remezcla. “Especially in the Latin community.”
