Lil Nas X Faces Felony Charges In Court And Sends A Message To Fans
Grammy-winning rapper Lil Nas X, known for Old Town Road and Montero (Call Me By Your Name), was in a Los Angeles courtroom on 12 March 2026, with his legal team working to keep him out of prison.
What are the charges?
On 21 August 2025, just before 6am, police were called to Ventura Boulevard in Studio City after reports that Lil Nas was walking in traffic nearly naked and behaving erratically. Prosecutors allege he lunged at and punched a responding officer, injuring three in total. He was transported to hospital for medical evaluation following concerns about an alleged drug overdose, then booked into Van Nuys Jail.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office charged him with three felony counts of battery with injury on a police officer, along with one count of resisting a police officer. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and, if convicted, faces up to five years in state prison. He was released on $75,000 bail on 25 August 2025.
His lawyer is pushing for a diversion programme
At the 12 March hearing, his attorney Christy O’Connor asked the judge to grant a delay so she could file a motion seeking to move the case into a diversion program. Such programs typically allow charges to be dismissed if defendants complete treatment or rehabilitation requirements. The judge agreed to delay proceedings and scheduled the next hearing for 6 April 2026.

Recovery and the road ahead
Following his release on bail, Lil Nas entered an inpatient treatment facility outside California. He was open about how shaken he was. “Your girl is gonna be okay,” he said in a social media post after the arrest. “That was terrifying.”
His father, Robert Stafford, also spoke publicly about the pressures he had been carrying — financial responsibilities, family circumstances, and the weight of his own expectations. It’s hard not to feel for someone working through something this difficult while the whole world is watching.
Outside the courthouse after the hearing, Lil Nas briefly addressed reporters. “All I wanted to say is to my fans, I really love and I miss you, and I appreciate your support so much, and I can’t wait to be back hugging you guys,” he said, before blowing a kiss to the crowd.
His next court date is 6 April 2026.
