Keir Starmer’s Labour: A Mixed Bag for LGBTQIA+ Rights?
Britain’s Attitude Magazine invited Keir Starmer, the man who looks set to lead the British Labour Party to a landslide victory in the general election this week, to discuss his party’s policies and approach to LGBTQIA+ people and our community.
But Attitude’s publisher, Darren Styles, has felt it necessary to apply “context and correction” to Starmer’s open letter, drawing attention to his stated opinions on trans people, and a conversation he has had with high-profile anti-trans campaigner, the writer JK Rowling.
A Turning Point for Britain
Starmer’s letter, published by Attitude, paints a hopeful picture for LGBTQIA+ rights under a Labour government. He promises to reverse the decline in rights seen under the current administration. Hate crimes, especially those targeting sexual orientation and gender identity, have surged. Starmer recounts personal experiences with homophobic violence, underscoring his commitment to change.
However, Starmer’s stance on trans issues has raised concerns. He has expressed willingness to meet with JK Rowling to discuss sex and gender and has made statements that align with more conservative views on gender identity. This has led to fears that his policies might not fully support the trans community.
Context Matters
Darren Styles emphasises that while Starmer’s promises are significant, his recent comments need scrutiny. Attitude asked Starmer to meet with Caroline Litman, the mother of a trans woman who took her own life after waiting years for gender-affirming care. This request has yet to be answered, raising questions about Starmer’s commitment to trans rights.
As the election approaches, the LGBTQIA+ community faces tough choices. While Labour’s policies promise progress, the lack of clear support for trans rights is troubling. It’s crucial for voters to consider all aspects of Starmer’s platform and push for comprehensive equality.
Starmer’s Labour government could bring much-needed advancements for LGBTQIA+ rights. However, it’s essential to hold him accountable and ensure that trans rights are not sidelined. As Styles puts it, “We are stronger together, as LGB and T.”
