Joe Locke Confirms Role In Marvel’s “Agatha All Along” As A Gay Teen
Joe Locke, known for his role in Heartstopper, has confirmed he will play a gay teen named Teen in Marvel’s new series Agatha All Along. This series is a spin-off from WandaVision and follows Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness. After her clash with Wanda Maximoff, Agatha is now on a quest to regain her powers.
Agatha’s New Mission
In Agatha All Along, Agatha is trapped in the town of Westview, living as a nosy suburban housewife. The first trailer, released last week, reveals Agatha’s new role as a detective. She discovers a body, which sets her on a path to reclaim her powers.
A Coven of Witches
Agatha’s story leads her to gather a coven of witches. Joe Locke’s character, Teen, is part of this group. Other stars include Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza, who also play witches. Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, Locke confirmed that Teen is an out queer character. “The way [Teen’s sexuality is] explored in the show is very truthful and very positive,” he shared. However, he insisted that Teen’s queerness is just one part of his character.
Fans initially speculated that Locke would play Wiccan, one of Marvel’s well-known gay superheroes and Wanda’s son. However, the trailer shows that Teen and Agatha are on good terms, which would be unlikely if he were Wiccan, given Agatha’s history with Wanda.
Locke described the series as a dark comedy about witches. “It’s not what you would usually expect from a Marvel series,” he said. “It’s definitely darker. It’s actually a little bit scary, which is good. I think it’s a great start for a new journey within the MCU of exploring different types of characters that aren’t like Iron Man or Captain America. It’s a new type of superhero, which I think is exciting.”
Agatha All Along will premiere on Disney+ on 18 September, with new episodes released weekly through November.
