On World AIDS Day 2024, South African HIV advocate Ibanomonde Ngema will take control of Charlize Theron’s Instagram account, reaching 7.6 million followers. The 21-year-old activist, who was born with HIV, aims to share her life story and clear up common myths about the virus.

Theron, the South African-born star of Monster and Mad Max: Fury Road, picked Ngema to lead this World AIDS Day 2024 initiative. The Oscar winner, who serves as a UN Messenger of Peace, focuses on supporting young women and girls facing health challenges.

The Current State of HIV

Recent UNAIDS data shows a serious situation in sub-Saharan Africa. Women and girls made up 62% of new HIV cases last year. Social and legal issues make them more likely to get the virus.

‘Ending AIDS is possible. We need to stop harmful stigma through better laws and support,’ Theron said about the social media takeover planned for World AIDS Day 2024.

Ngema shared her thoughts: ‘I’ve always loved watching Charlize on screen. Her work to help others in South Africa is amazing.’ The young activist spends her time teaching people about HIV and fighting against wrong ideas about the virus.

This World AIDS Day partnership brings together Theron’s star power and Ngema’s real-life experience. Their goal? To teach people about HIV and AIDS and push for better healthcare and support worldwide.

The takeover comes at a crucial time when accurate information about HIV needs to reach more people. Ngema plans to use Theron’s platform (@charlizeafrica) to share honest, clear facts about living with HIV in today’s world.
