The acclaimed drama series Mary And George premiered in March at The Biltmore in Downtown Los Angeles, where Nicholas Galitzine delved into his role in the scandalous period piece.

Alongside Oscar-winner Julianne Moore, the show draws inspiration from the salacious yet true story of a mother-son duo who navigated the Court Of England and captivated King James I through cunning and seduction. Mary recognises the power George’s beauty has over others and grooms him to become the king’s lover.

Historical dramas have had a significant uptake in the last few years kicking off with Bridgerton. The gossipy Netflix series isn’t the only period drama to be doing well. There’s HBO’s The Gilded Age, Hulu’s The Great, Netflix’s The Crown, and the list goes on.

Period dramas come in all forms; comedic and anachronistic or reflective and sincere – Mary And George went for bold and impactful. The series doesn’t shy away from provocative scenes, which include gruelling childbirth, suicide attempts and steamy French orgies.

Galitzine spoke with Out on the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles, he expressed excitement for portraying George’s multifaceted character, highlighting his emotional journey and seductive prowess. “George, he’s so fallible in so many ways and so textured. He undergoes this amazing emotional journey and I think who he is as a seductor is part of his power in a way, and that was certainly really fun to play,” he says.

Galitzine emphasized the significance of nudity in the series, particularly in depicting power dynamics and George Villiers’ pursuit of influence through seduction. “In a show like ours, so much is said in these scenes. Sometimes there is a tenderness. But for George Villiers, this was his way of dominating people,” Galitzine muses. “This was how he crossed the threshold of power and was able to accrue so much power by seducing this king.”
