Aussie Billionaire Hamish Douglass Comes Out As Gay And Credits His Ex-Wife With Saving His Life

Hamish Douglass, the Australian who co-founded Magellan Financial Group, has come out as gay in a long-form interview on the Rampart Talks podcast with journalist Joe Aston, released on 21 April 2026. It is the first time the once high-profile fund manager has spoken publicly about his sexuality, the mental breakdown that ended his career, and the late father whose closeted life he refused to copy.

A 30-year marriage and a quiet conversation

Douglass told his then-wife Alexandra he was gay in May 2021, ending a marriage of close to three decades that produced four children. He had never been with a man at that point. “I’d separated with my wife, but I wanted to find out who I was, and I wanted to do it openly,” he told Aston. He chose to come out to his family rather than live in secrecy.

The father who lived in secret

That decision was shaped by his late father Gordon.

“My father was gay but he remained married to my mother, but he lived a secret life,” Douglass said.

He has been clear that what he resented was the secrecy, not his father’s sexuality, and that he was not willing to repeat it.

The breakdown behind the headlines

By February 2022, Douglass was on indefinite medical leave from Magellan as the firm’s share price collapsed. He had been one of Australia’s most-watched fund managers, worth more than AUD1 billion at the peak. Then everything stopped.

“I was crying in a corner, I just couldn’t do this anymore. I then had a complete mental breakdown,” he told Aston.

He was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and has since recovered. He credits Alexandra, the woman he had just come out to, with keeping him alive. “Had my wife not picked me up at that moment, I don’t think I’d be here today,” he said.

Where he is now

Douglass is reportedly in a new relationship and remains on good terms with Alexandra. His current net worth sits at roughly AUD300 million, well below the billionaire mark, but a long way from the bottom of where the Magellan slide once threatened to leave him.
