“Emilia Pérez” Steals The Spotlight At The Golden Globes As “Wicked” And Jodie Foster Win Big
There was a thrilling start to the awards season yesterday with The Golden Globes in Los Angeles. Emilia Pérez emerged as a standout feature, taking home four trophies and lighting up the evening with its bold trans storyline.
“It’s a night to remember,” said Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón.
Some have raised concerns, claiming the film’s focus might overshadow the real experiences of trans people who still fight for everyday acceptance.
Others insist it’s a step forward for trans representation. When Karla took the stage, she said, “You can never take away our soul, or our resistance, or our dignity. Raise your voice: I am who I am. Know who you are.”
Karla Sofía Gascón became a talking point for the evening. She lost out on the Best Actress prize, but her powerful speech captivated the room. The film won Best Film (Musical or Comedy), Best Non-English Language Film, Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Best Original Song.
It’s already looking like a favourite for the Oscars, set for later in the season, and Emilia Pérez could be the movie that convinces voters to pay closer attention to trans narratives.

Wicked Wins Big
Wicked claimed a special Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award. This category, introduced last year, aims to celebrate films that pack theatres. Though Wicked doesn’t feature a queer relationship, it resonates with many of us for its themes of being different and the presence of openly LGBTQIA+ stars. It raked in around $700 million, which thrilled fans and studios alike.
TV Triumphs
Jodie Foster won Best TV Actress (Limited Series) for her role in True Detective: Night Country. This was her tenth nomination and fifth Golden Globe! She thanked her wife, Alexandra Heddison, calling her the “love of my life”.

Jessica Gunning won Best TV Supporting Actress for Baby Reindeer. The show, which also stars Nava Mau, won Best TV Series in the limited series category.
Hacks beat other quirky comedies in the musical or comedy group, including Only Murders In The Building and Abbott Elementary. Fans loved the story arcs involving Ava Daniels, played by Hannah Einbinder, who brought more than a few laughs and heartwarming moments. Lead star Jean Smart took home Best Actress in her category, adding to the show’s winning streak.
We love seeing trans representation shine so bright, and Emilia Pérez didn’t disappoint. Will the Oscars follow suit and reward this powerful film? The season has just started, and there’s plenty more to come.
