Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa Tops The Independent’s 2024 Pride List

The Independent has released its Pride List for 2024, highlighting 50 LGBTQIA+ change-makers who have made an impact over the last year. The list came out at the start of Pride Month and features Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa at the top. Gatwa came out as queer in September.

Gatwa is now a well-known name, having been cast as the current incarnation of the Time Lord known as The Doctor in Doctor Who. He’s the first Black and queer actor to play the Doctor. The show’s writer, Russell T Davies, said that future episodes will talk more about race and queerness.

The Rwandan-Scottish actor has been vocal about supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. He accused the UK government of using trans people as a scapegoat for its own problems. In an interview, he said that when politicians openly attack marginalised groups, it makes it okay for everyone else to do the same.

He also shared a personal story about attending Manchester Pride. It was the first time he met another queer Rwandan person. Before that, he thought he was the only one in the world.

The Independent’s Pride List 2024 also includes other LGBTQIA+ change-makers, like sports presenter Alex Scott, actor Andrew Scott, Labour MP Wes Streeting, comedian Rosie Jones, and singer Olly Alexander. Other honourees include footballer Beth Mead, comedian Joe Lycett, former British Vogue Editor-In-Chief Edward Enninful, TV and radio presenter Rylan Clark, music legend Elton John, UK Black Pride founder Lady Phyll, activist and model Munroe Bergdorf, and drag queen Bimini.
