The new season of Australia’s I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (IACGMOOH) features a star-studded cast including Olympic medal-winning boxer, ballet dancer and DNA #267 cover star Harry Garside. When we spoke with Harry for his cover feature he revealed his attitude towards allyship and toxic masculinity and his new platform in the jungle gives him an even bigger audience.

Harry is leading the charge against toxic masculinity

Harry is an Olympic medal-winning boxer, who trains in ballet, wears nail varnish and is an ally of the LGBTQIA+ community. At just 25, he’s wise and self-aware beyond his years. In his interview with Matthew Myers for DNA, he spoke about wanting to reshape expectations of masculinity.

Garside doesn’t shy away from femininity and believes that the norms for men and women do unseen harm to young people. “Young men, especially, often don’t have the emotional intelligence to understand why they are wrong. But by starting the conversation we can actually help young people to change and be better humans,” he says.

“I like being a straight mate. I hope that I’m being a good advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community and helping to make more straight people start questioning their beliefs, especially people throughout the boxing community. Hopefully they can accept people for who they are and try their best not to judge,” says Harry.

What’s next for this multi-faceted athlete and advocate?

Garside is one of the 14 celebrities in this season of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and he has been vocal as ever since DNA #267 about wanting gender norms to change. The boxing community is considered to be hyper-masculine, so Garside’s love of the sport and his commitment to his beliefs make him stand out.

From wearing a dress on the red carpet to wearing nail polish to his weigh-ins, Garside leads by example. So far, he has competed in three challenges on IACGMOOH and has been safe each time. In the talking heads on the series, other cast members muse about how surprised they are by Harry and how he isn’t what they were expecting from a champion Olympic boxer.
