Could A “Reinvented” Bond Also Be A Gay Bond? DNA Speculates…
Aaron Taylor-Johnson is rumoured to have been offered the role as the next James Bond. Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to playing action roles with his best known being in Marvel’s Age Of Ultron and the cult classic Kick-Ass.
Early reports of Taylor-Johnson’s casting have been dispelled though as insiders clarify they are still in discussions about the role. This got us thinking at DNA about who we’d like see taking on the suave, martini-sipping (shaken, obvi) British spy.
Could it even be time for a gay Bond?
There are many fine actors who would do well in the role. Every new Bond actor brings their unique spin to the character; compare Connery’s womaniser to Craig’s earnestness and it’s evident there’s room for interpretation.
What makes James Bond iconic though? Is it the cars? The accent? The one-liners perhaps! Bond has evolved throughout his time in pop culture and audiences expect every new actor to reinvent the role.
Taylor-Johnson would make a wonderful Bond, and so would many other actors. Being DNA, we definitely would love to see a gay actor tackle the role – even seeing the new James Bond being gay would be incredible.
Bond producer Barbara Broccoli teased the reinvention of the character saying, “We’re working out where to go with him. It’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”
Our top picks of gay Bonds
So, if they’re putting in all this work to reinvent Bond, why not indulge a hypothetical and come up with a list of actors who would smash being the first gay James Bond?
Jonathan Bailey
Having launched into the spotlight with Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers and Wicked, Bailey is taking Hollywood by storm. With his classic leading man looks and that charming British accent to boot, he’s a major contender in our books.
Colman Domingo
A seasoned professional, Colman Domingo has the talent and charisma to pull off James Bond. His recent roles in Euphoria, The Colour Purple and Rustin showcase how brilliant Domingo is; take into account his distinguished style and handsomeness and you’ve got a Bond recipe right there.
Luke Evans
Starring predominantly in fantasy and action films, Luke Evans strikes the perfect figure of refined, old-world beauty. His roles in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug and Beauty And The Beast showcase his acting range.
Joel Kim Booster
American comedian, writer and actor Joel Kim Booster is most well-known for his film Fire Island. With his skills as an actor and his good looks, he would make a fabulous Bond!
Wentworth Miller
American-British actor and screenwriter Wentworth Miller first appeared on our radar in his Fox drama Prison Break. He’s had guest roles on Law And Order: SVU and The Flash since then. With his piercing eyes (a la Daniel Craig) and his demonstrated range, we wouldn’t mind seeing him don the tuxedo.
Matt Bomer
Is there anyone that embodies the look of Bond more than Matt Bomer? Classically handsome, refined and talented; all traits well-deserving of the mantle of Bond. Bomer’s recent role in Fellow Travelers lets us know he’s up for emotionally gripping scenes and his breakout role in White Collar lets us know he plays an agent very well.
Look, the possibilities are endless! Diverse and interesting picks should be welcomed. With the reinvention of Bond underway, we would encourage you to think on who you’d like to see take up the role.
