Colton Haynes And James Scully Star In Queer Country Music Ballad “In Your Love” By Tyler Childers
At DNA, we are always on the lookout for outstanding music that platforms LGBTQIA+ stories and/or artists. This is how we stumbled across Tyler Childers’ new single In Your Love. The soulful ballad tells the tale of a lovestruck figure professing his devotion for his beloved – the accompanying music video stars out actors Colton Haynes and James Scully.
Cuntry at it’s finest
The country music genre has made strides in the last decade towards greater acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community. Just look at the show of allyship from musicians like Kacey Musgraves, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and Brothers Osborne.
Country music has a reputation for being repetitive or simple, often involving lyrics centring around an ex lover or some man’s truck. In reality, though, the genre finds its strength in extolling narratives of love, struggle and the human condition. It’s actually one of the perfect genres to write queer storylines in.
Hence the success of Childers’ new single. He broke into the scene with his studio album Purgatory and has been releasing music since 2011. He credits his gay cousin as his musical mentor and the inspiration for the In Your Love music video. The single is from his latest album Rustin’ In The Rain which was nominated for Best Country Album at the Grammy Awards.
The music video for In Your Love follows two handsome young coal miners (Haynes and Scully) who fall in love despite their harsh environment. In the face of hatred, they build a life together that’s tragically cut short as one falls sick (presumably from working in the coal mines). The end of the music video shows Haynes’ holding Scully in his arms as he succumbs to his illness and then flashes forward to him sitting alone on that same porch as on older man reminiscing.
In Your Love was nominated for Best Country Solo Performance, Best Country Song and Best Music Video at the 2024 Grammys.
