Catholic Advances For Same-Sex Couples Endorsed By Pope Francis And The Vatican
On Monday, December 18, the Vatican released statements bestowing Catholic priests with the ability to bless same-sex couples under certain circumstances, a historic move for the church.
The doctrinal documents state that these blessings are not meant to legitimise homosexual marriage or equate same-sex coupling with heterosexual marriage, but the change is being labelled a landmark victory for the LGBTQIA+ community.
He really is the People’s Pope
As mentioned by Associated Press, the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality has always been that it’s a sin. The goalpost has shifted throughout time and, when asked in previous meetings, Pope Francis himself has stated same-sex attraction isn’t a sin but homosexual activity is.
These new Vatican documents outline circumstances under which priests can administer blessings to same-sex couples. Pope Francis has been trying to lead the church towards greater LGBTQIA+ acceptance with the viewpoint that all individuals are welcomed by God.
Although the Catholic Church remains steadfast in its dismissal of same-sex marriage, these blessings are intended to place focus on keeping the Holy Spirit in people’s lives and enriching their relationship with God.
The document titled Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust) has an 11-page section called Blessings Of Couples In Irregular Situations And Of Couples Of The Same Sex where specific situations are outlined where a priest may offer blessings to LGBTQIA+ couples. The document includes quotes saying, “God never turns away anyone who approaches him,” and, “Ultimately, a blessing offers people a means to increase their trust in God.”
Predictably, conservative branches of the Catholic Church will express criticism of the landmark ruling. For LGBTQIA+ Catholics, this change will allow them to feel more welcomed by their faith leaders.
