Brazilian Tennis Star João Lucas Reis da Silva Serves Love And Changing Men’s Tennis
Is the sports world finally ready for authentic representation? When was the last time you saw a male tennis star living openly and thriving professionally without compromise?
For far too long, the men’s tennis circuit has been a place where players felt they needed to hide their true selves – until João Lucas Reis da Silva changed everything with one heartfelt Instagram post.

From Sweet Selfie to Tournament Success
After posting a loving birthday message to his boyfriend, Gui Sampaio Ricardo, with the words “I love you very much,” Reis da Silva had one of his best weeks on the tennis court. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as he claimed victory at the Procopio Cup in December, ending 2024 on a total high.
“It was a buzz that I wasn’t expecting,” he told CNN Sport. The positive reaction “gave me strength” as he competed that same week in São Paulo.
Making Tennis History
This casual Instagram post made waves across the tennis world, with Reis da Silva becoming the first active male player to come out as gay. It’s a genuine breakthrough moment!
While former players like Americans Brian Vahaly and Bobby Blair came out after retiring, the men’s game has lacked the visible representation that women’s tennis has long embraced through icons like Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova.
Current star Daria Kasatkina, who came out in 2022, explained it perfectly: “I think that our society takes two girls together more easily than two dudes together. I think that’s the main problem. Because of the stereotypes that the man has to be masculine, it’s stopped a lot of guys from coming out.”
Finding Freedom in Truth
For the world number 423, sharing his truth wasn’t always easy. The fear of rejection haunted him, especially among his tennis peers.
“I was scared,” admits Reis da Silva. But everything changed when he came out to family and friends at 18. “I felt like I had taken a big rock from my shoulders. The feeling, waking up next day, was perfect.”
Love and Tennis Goals
We can’t help but cheer for this rising star who now enjoys the courtside support of boyfriend Guilherme Sampaio Ricardo. The couple has been together for two years, with Ricardo often traveling to tournaments when his acting and modeling work allows.

Currently ranked 423rd, Reis da Silva dreams of qualifying for a grand slam event this year. Despite some recent setbacks, he remains positive about his game.
“I like to keep competing,” he says. “I need to play as many matches as I can right now.”
The Perfect Response
The reaction to his post was overwhelmingly positive, with fans worldwide sending messages of support. “I felt like people were there for me, and it was a great feeling,” he shares.
Even better was how his fellow players responded: “It changed nothing, and it was the best thing for me.”
Despite his newfound visibility, Reis da Silva just wants to focus on tennis. He’s not looking to radically change his approach to life or sport.
“I wake up tomorrow at 8am and go to the court and try to be my best player and the best person. If people look at me and are inspired, I love to see it. But my responsibility is to do the best job I can do on court. That’s what I’m chasing.”
With his authentic spirit and impressive skills, we’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this rising tennis star!
