It is officially tennis season. The courts are heating up and this year we have a very special reason to watch the qualifying rounds closely. João Lucas Reis da Silva has arrived Down Under and is ready to make his mark at the Australian Open.

Making history in Melbourne.

The 25-year-old Brazilian is about to become the first openly gay man to compete in the Australian Open. He has touched down in Melbourne for his debut in the qualifying draw of the first Grand Slam of 2026. This is a massive moment for visibility in a sport that has historically been quiet on the LGBTQIA+ front for men.

Reis da Silva, currently ranked 204th in the world, came out publicly in December 2024. He was the sole openly gay active player on the tour for a year until Swiss talent Mika Brunold joined him in living openly last month. It is a slow change, but a welcome one. Reis da Silva proved that authenticity works when he snagged his first Challenger title in Santa Fe last year. Now he is eyeing a spot in the main draw.

The path to the main stage.

Getting into the main event will not be easy. The qualifying draw is notoriously brutal. Reis da Silva needs to win three consecutive matches to secure one of the 16 coveted qualifier spots.

His first hurdle is the 21-year-old Portuguese player Henrique Rocha. Rocha is ranked 157th and will be a formidable opponent when they meet on Court 16. If Reis da Silva can get past Rocha he faces an even tougher road. He could potentially meet Argentina’s Marco Trungelliti or the local Australian wildcard Philip Sekulic. To make matters more intense the top seed in his section is Yannick Hanfmann from Germany who sits just outside the top 100.

“A tennis player already has a lot of pressure and things going through their mind… the simpler your day-to-day life is, the better you can handle things on the court,” he said in a recent interview.

He often shares snaps with his partner, Gui Sampaio Ricardo. Ricardo is a Brazilian actor and model who recently starred in a production of Bent. Their relationship has been a source of strength for the tennis star. It is refreshing to see a male player on the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) tour comfortably sharing his life and love with the world.

Reis da Silva is not just playing for ranking points or prize money. He’s showing young LGBTQIA+ fans that they belong on the centre court, too. He mentioned previously that he suspects other players might be gay but are not open yet. His visibility might be the encouragement they need.

“I think there are other gay players on tour, but they’re not open,” he noted.

We’ll be cheering him on as he takes to the blue hard courts. Win or lose he has already scored a victory for visibility.
