A new documentary from Madman Entertainment has been announced called The Giants. Its subject matter: Australian Greens co-founder and iconic LGBTQIA+ hero Bob Brown. Throughout his illustrious career, Bob Brown has worked tirelessly to carve out space in politics for a conversation about our earth and the alarming climate disaster.

The Giants follows the trajectory of Brown’s life’s work intertwining his story with a strong environmental motif featuring cinematography capturing the ancient beauty of the forests and trees Brown hopes to conserve.

Bob Brown’s early work

Bob Brown’s political career is legendary, with his advocacy for nature beginning in earnest in the ’70s. Before politics, Brown worked as a medical doctor and travelled around before settling back in his home state, Tasmania.

His election to the Australian senate made him the first openly gay man in parliament and his campaigns for the environment led to the formation of the first Greens party in the world. His views extend beyond just climate recognition though; Brown campaigned for human rights, asylum seekers, LGBTQIA+ rights and Indigenous communities.

The Giants will “stun and delight”

Choosing to interweave Brown’s engaging and critical activism with tranquil scenes of the forestry he loves works to break up The Giants documentary. Brown’s work, though essential and captivating, works well when combined with the beautiful animation that allows audiences to breathe between talking heads and biographical information, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Archival footage and first-hand accounts demonstrate Brown’s integrity and his fight for nature that new generations will be able to engage with and learn from.

The Giants is out in cinemas April 20.
