Benito Skinner Gets Deliciously Real About “Overcompensating’s” Messy Bits
Prime Video’s new series delivers genuine college experiences and frank sexuality.
Benito Skinner, the creative force behind the new Prime Video series Overcompensating, has been opening up about bringing the show’s much-discussed sex scenes to screen. And honestly? We are here for the candour. The series, which dropped on May 15, is a half-hour comedy diving into the wonderfully messy world of Benny, a former football hero figuring out his sexuality during those formative college years.

Overcompensating isn’t shying away from the realities of bedroom (and probably dorm room floor) exploration. Since its premiere, people have been talking about its hilarious dialogue and spot-on portrayal of LGBTQIA+ experiences. But it is the sex scenes – spicy, funny, and sometimes downright clumsy – that are earning nods for their sheer relatability.
Skinner explained to Pride that authenticity was key. “This feels true and honest, and this is how my experience was,” he shared.

“Sex can be terrifying, bizarre, weird, hot… I think you can have sex dreams in college! All of these should feel how they really feel. If it felt honest to us, we were going to have it.”
It sounds like a refreshing change from some of the overly polished encounters we often see. Remember those early days of trying to figure it all out? This show seems to get it.
Finding Your Way Through The “Disgusting” Beauty Of It All
The series charts Benny’s often confusing path to self-acceptance, a journey Skinner himself drew from. “It was inspired by my experience of coming out and feeling so confused. The entire time, even when I started to come out,” he revealed. “I hadn’t seen that on screen yet. I felt confused, I didn’t know who I was anymore.”
Setting this story against a university backdrop was a deliberate choice to capture that unique blend of chaos and self-discovery. Skinner aimed to showcase the “beauty” within the messy parts of coming out, particularly highlighting supportive relationships. “I think for so many of us, it’s these safe spaces created by women that are around us,” he noted. “That was the inspiration, and I was like, let’s also put it at college and make it disgusting.” We love A bit Of “disgusting” realism.
Alongside Benny, played by Skinner, is Carmen (Wallay Barram), an outsider determined to fit in, and they navigate horrible hookups and questionable choices with guidance from Benny’s sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her boyfriend (Adam DiMarco).

A Guest List You Will Want To See
And if the core cast and relatable storylines were not enough, Overcompensating boasts an impressive lineup of guest appearances. Get ready to spot familiar faces like Megan Fox, Bowen Yang, Matt Rogers, James Van Der Beek, and even the legendary Didi Conn.
The list continues with Charli XCX, who not only guest stars but also serves as an executive producer and executive music producer, so you know the soundtrack is going to be on point. Talk about adding some extra sparkle.

At DNA, we reckon Overcompensating might just be the honest, funny, and slightly chaotic series we have been waiting for.
