HITTING A HOME RUN FOR REPRESENTATION
Anderson Comas is a minor league baseball player with the Chicago White Sox. The 23-year-old is from the Dominican Republic and began his career in 2017 with the Chicago Dominican Summer League.
Taking to Instagram, Anderson Comas declared to his 33,000 followers that he is proudly gay. “This may be my most personal thing I ever share and it’s that I’m proudly and happily part of the LGTBQIA+ community.
“I’m also a human with a great soul, I’m respectful, I’m a lover, I love my family and friends and that’s what really matters. I enjoy my work a lot, being a professional baseball player is the best thing that happened to me so I just wanna say something to those people that says that gay people can not be someone in this life, well look at me I’m Gay and I’m a professional athlete so that didn’t stopped me to make my dreams come true,” he says.
Comas is in good company coming out and he joins Solomon Bates and David Denson who are also minor league baseball players who have come out, reports OutSports.
The announcement has been met with overwhelming support from his fellow baseball players, fans, and the Chicago White Sox organisation. Chris Getz, general manager for the White Sox says: “Anderson first shared his news with us last year. I was very pleased that he was comfortable sharing with us in player development. I was also happy at the reaction across the organisation… we are all so proud of Anderson and that he’s comfortable sharing such an important personal part of his life so openly.”
Comas coming out has the potential to inspire more LGBTQIA+ athletes to come out in the future, and to help create a more inclusive and welcoming environment in sports. As Comas wrote in his Instagram post, “I’m doing this cause I wanna be an inspiration for those like me out there fitting for their dreams, please don’t listen to those stupid things that people say about us, fight for your dreams, believe in yourself and go for it.”
