Fellow Travelers is an upcoming miniseries on Showtime starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey in a sweeping gay love story that chronicles LGBTQIA+ rights in the US from McCarthyism to the AIDS epidemic.

We have a trailer, we know the cast, and we know the general plot, which means anticipation for the release is high!

A sweeping gay love story

Following Jonathan Bailey’s success with Bridgerton, he had his pick of projects to pursue. He tells Vanity Fair that he wanted to do a “sweeping gay love story” but had never actually seen one that felt true to what he wanted. Then, along came Fellow Travelers with openly gay actor Matt Bomer already attached as star and executive producer.

The plot follows Tim Laughlin (Bailey) and Hawkins Fuller (Bomer), two young men who begin an illicit affair that spans decades. The story was written by Thomas Mallon and is an examination of queer love against the backdrop of shame, secrecy and triumph in the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The nuance of a complicated, volatile queer relationship is the power balance – and that is what is amazing about Tim and Hawk,” Bailey says. “Every single sex scene is a meticulous examination of power.”

Bomer believes the tense political backdrop helps create intimacy between Hawkins and Tim. “There’s a level of trust and intimacy that’s even more valuable when society is against you,” he says. “You keep your secrets together.”

With production wrapped, Fellow Travelers is slated to release sometime in Fall of 2023.
