Anthony Bowens, the out AEW star, has kindly offered to step in for Joaquin Phoenix after the Joker actor abruptly dropped out of the NC-17 gay romance movie he created. Phoenix’s sudden exit has left the future of the Todd Haynes-directed film in limbo.

Though Phoenix hasn’t publicly commented on his about-face, there’s speculation about whether he backed out over the movie’s explicit content, which he had previously endorsed. A source close to the actor told Variety the star got “cold feet”.

Actor and filmmaker Kit Williamson weighed in on Phoenix’s exit, posting, “What this really proves is that studios are only comfortable making high budget ‘gay movies’ if there’s a straight lead. Even in a Todd Haynes movie. Even if it means losing seven figures. They’re not interested in recasting, because a gay actor, to them, can never be a ‘star.'”

Bowens: “I Can and Will Change This”

Bowens, arguably the most visible out pro wrestler today, replied to Williamson’s observation with a promise: “I can and will change this one day.” While Bowens’ acting experience may be limited, he’s no stranger to breaking boundaries and using his platform to promote acceptance and inclusivity.

There’s a long history of pro wrestlers transitioning to acting, and with Bowens’ charisma and confidence, there’s no reason why he couldn’t shine in an NC-17 gay romance film. Phoenix’s exit highlights the ongoing debate surrounding LGBTQIA+ actors and leads in Hollywood. But with Bowens ready to step in, it’s clear that change is on the horizon.

As Bowens himself said, “I never thought that I would be able to live my dream because there was a time when I was very confused. And I didn’t know how to accept myself.” With his promise to change the game for LGBTQIA+ leads in Hollywood, he’s paving the way for a new era of inclusivity on the big screen.
