Out country singer Adam Mac was set to perform at the Grand Finale Concert of the Logan County Tobacco And Heritage Festival in Kentucky on October 14. In an unexpected turn, Mac has withdrawn from the festival headline after concerns were raised about his sexuality, reports Advocate.

“I don’t really know what they expected I was going to do…”

On Saturday, September 23, the festival posted a statement saying the Grand Finale Concert and Fireworks were cancelled “due to circumstances beyond our control”. One day later, another announcement was posted to Facebook that says, “Adam Mac made the decision to cancel the concert due to safety concerns for himself, his band and the concert attendees. While we did not request him to cancel, we respect his decision.”

When Mac posted his explanation on TikTok, he mentions that he was excited to return to his hometown to perform for the festival, but after a difficult conversation with a Chamber Of Commerce member he decided it would not be the safest option.

Part of the conversation with an organiser raised concerns about the type of performance Mac would be giving. “They wanted to ensure that I would not be promoting homosexuality or sexuality in a family-friendly environment,” he says. “I don’t really know what they expected I was going to do other than just come and put on a hell of a show like we do.”

The Chamber Of Commerce member spoke with Mac about outrage from local groups and fellow Chamber members who were worried about having a gay man headline the concert. When told about the threats of protests on the day, Mac ultimately felt that cancelling was one of his only options to ensure the safety of all in attendance.

Country music stars have rallied behind Mac in a show of solidarity. Kelsea Ballerini, Brandy Clark and Maren Morris are all singers who have vocally called out the anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiments of the festival and expressed their willingness to stand up for Adam Mac.
