“Blutige Anfänger” Is the German Gay Cop Drama Worth Binge-Watching
If your watchlist has a gap where a good gay romance should be, Germany has the fix. Blutige Anfänger, or Bloody Beginners, is a ZDF crime series about trainee cops in Halle who solve murders while their personal lives quietly fall apart. It ran for six seasons, and its slow-burn gay couple has become the reason a lot of new viewers keep pressing play.
The show premiered in January 2020 and ran to 72 episodes across six seasons, travelling internationally under the title Rookies. The premise is simple. Police students in Halle juggle grim homicide cases with friendships, exams and messy love lives.
It plays as part police procedural, part coming-of-age drama, and it lets the young cast be both sharp at the job and a mess everywhere else. Queer characters have been part of the story since the earlier seasons.
Season four, which aired in 2022, brought the pairing everyone started talking about. Phillip Schneider, played by Eric Cordes, is the disciplined one. He follows the rules, thinks before he moves, and likes his life in order. Bruno Pérez, played by Martin Peñaloza Cecconi, is the opposite: charming, impulsive and led by his heart far more than his head. Put them in the same academy and the tension takes care of itself.
Ever get hooked on a couple purely from the tension between them? This is that. What starts as friction between two trainees grows into something warmer and much more satisfying. Phillip slowly lowers his guard while Bruno learns to be vulnerable, and the show is happy to take its time.
There is yearning. There are loaded looks across a room. There is plenty of kissing once the walls finally drop. Better still, the romance sits inside the wider story instead of being bolted on. These are working cops who happen to be falling for each other, so the big moments feel earned. We’re only human, so yes, it helps that both leads are ridiculously good-looking.
Where To Watch It
Here’s the catch. Depending on where you live, streaming Blutige Anfänger on ZDF’s free platform might take a VPN and a little patience. Fan edits online have pulled plenty of people into Phillip and Bruno’s story as well. Either way, it’s worth the effort. The show is still a niche pick outside Germany, but with sharp mysteries, a proper slow burn and one very good-looking couple at the centre, that probably won’t stay true for long.
