German Referee Pascal Kaiser Assaulted Days After Viral Stadium Proposal

Only days after capturing the world’s heart with a public proposal, German referee Pascal Kaiser has been attacked outside his home.

Last week, we celebrated with the rest of the football world when Kaiser got down on one knee at the Rhein Energie Stadion. The stadium cheered. FC Köln shared the love. It felt like a massive win for visibility in men’s sport.

But the joy was short-lived. According to reports from L’Equipe and Attitude, the bisexual referee was assaulted by three men in his own garden late Saturday night.

Kaiser had reportedly received death threats and messages leaking his home address shortly after the video of his proposal to Moritz went viral. He contacted the police, but they informed him there was no “immediate threat”.

Just 20 minutes after that call, while smoking a cigarette in his garden, he was ambushed.

The attack left Kaiser with an injury to his right eye. It is a terrifying escalation that reminds us that visibility often comes with a dangerous price tag.

Police protection and online hate.

Spanish politician and trans rights advocate Carla Antonelli shared a photo of Kaiser’s bruised face on Instagram, condemning the violence.

“Terrible message, if you make yourself visible, we’ll put you in the closet,” Antonelli wrote. She confirmed that police intervened after the physical assault and that Kaiser is now in a safe place under police protection.

Following the incident, Kaiser and his fiancé have locked their Instagram accounts. The couple, who shared such a special moment with 50,000 fans, have been forced into hiding for their own safety.

The cost of being a voice.

During the proposal, Kaiser declared, “I want everyone to see that I love this person. A man. As a man. In football.”

He has previously spoken to the German outlet Schwulissimo about his drive to be a role model.

“I see this as my mission: to create visibility. To be a voice,” he said. “I know how lonely it can be to think you’re the only one.”

This attack proves exactly why that mission is so vital, and yet, so risky. The football community cheered for them in the stadium, but the reality outside the gates remains hostile. We still have a long way to go.

We hope Pascal and his fiancé recover from this traumatic event. We will keep you updated as we learn more.
