Sebastian Stan And Leo Woodall To Star As Gay Lovers Who Risked It All For Love

Sebastian Stan in We Have Always Lived in the Castle (Brainstorm Media) and Leo Woodall in Mad About The Boy (Universal Pictures).

Sebastian Stan and Leo Woodall, a duo we could definitely get used to seeing, are set to bring a powerful and gritty true queer story to the screen in Burning Rainbow Farm.

If you haven’t heard of the original events, buckle up, because this tale of love, defiance, and a self-made utopia that faced a tragic end is about to get its Hollywood spotlight. Variety first reported that Woodall will play Tom Crosslin, with Stan taking on the role of Rollie Rohm. While they’re the only cast announced so far, this pairing alone is enough to get us talking.

What Is The Story Behind Burning Rainbow Farm?

The film promises a deep dive into the real-life events surrounding Crosslin and Rohm. Back in 1990s Michigan, this couple carved out a unique space known as a “pot-friendly utopia.” Their Rainbow Farm was reportedly a sanctuary for cannabis enthusiasts and a welcoming retreat for the LGBTQIA+ community.

However, their dream took a harsh turn following a confrontation with police, which led to Rohm’s arrest and, devastatingly, the removal of their young son by authorities. The couple’s story ultimately concluded in a tragic and deadly standoff with law enforcement.

This cinematic project draws its inspiration from Dean Kuiper’s 2006 book, Burning Rainbow Farm: How A Stoner Utopia Went Up In Smoke. At the helm is director Justin Kurzel, known for his work on The Order. Speaking to Variety, Kurzel shared his perspective on the film. He described it as “a love story about two outliers who raise their middle finger to hate and declare ‘This is who we are, and we dare you to take it from us.’” He added, “I’m excited to create this lovable and courageous couple with Sebastian and Leo, their union will be one to remember.” We reckon he’s right; some stories just need to be told.

Our Leading Men Sebastian And Leo

Sebastian Stan comes to this role following significant buzz from projects like Marvel’s Thunderbolts and his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice, which earned him an Oscar nomination. For Leo Woodall, playing queer characters is familiar territory.

Many will remember him for his captivating performance in the second season of the acclaimed HBO series The White Lotus. He also portrayed a gay man earlier this year in the Apple TV+ show, Prime Target. It seems both actors are well-equipped to bring depth and authenticity to these complex characters.

At DNA, we are certainly keen to see how this poignant and confrontational piece of history is brought to life on screen. Will Burning Rainbow Farm shine a new light on Crosslin and Rohm’s story for a wider audience? We’ll be watching.
