Lil Nas X Faces Backlash Following The Release Of “J Christ”

Lil Nas X faced internet controversy when he announced his new single J Christ. The cover art for the new single featured Christian iconography and incurred some wrath from followers who read Nas’ new aesthetics as blasphemous.

In a new report from Social Blade, Lil Nas X has been shown to be losing followers since the release of J Christ and the music video on January 12.

“Bitch I’m Back Like J Christ…”

In the lead up to Nas promoting J Christ there was a commotion among religious audiences. Many commented on his use of crosses and angelic imagery as disrespectful. His fans hit back saying that Nas wasn’t blaspheming any more or less than Madonna burning crosses during her shows.

Social Blade shows that on the day that Nas dropped J Christ and the accompanying music video he lost 46,082 Instagram followers. In total, Nas has lost 209,730 Instagram followers in the last 30 days with the peak being on January 12.

Despite this loss of following, J Christ has been performing well as a single for the young artist. It has earned an estimated USD45,000 in royalties from Spotify since its release and earned 8,433,862 views on YouTube in the first five days of it’s upload.

For the religious few who appeared to take issue with the single before its release, it is key to note that the content of the song doesn’t actually revolve around Jesus Christ. The motif appears to be one of rebirth and renaissance rather than religion.

Nas sings:

Back-back-back up out the grave site
Bitch I’m back like J Christ
I’m finna get the gays hype
I’m finna take it yay high

These lyrics aren’t about Christianity but rather an artistic measure between the resurrection of Jesus and Nas’ own perceived resurrection from obscurity.
