67 New Anti‑LGBTQIA+ Laws Across The USA So Far In 2025

The American Civil Liberties Union’s live tracker shows 598 anti-LBGTQIA+ bills filed in US statehouses since January, already eclipsing last year’s total with five months still to run. Sixty-seven of those bills have been signed, confirming that the push to limit queer rights is not slowing but shifting into a higher gear.

Arkansas, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming alone account for 26 of the new statutes. Each has bundled bathroom bans with fresh hurdles to gender‑affirming care and, in some cases, clauses letting doctors or landlords refuse service if they cite religion. The concentration of laws in just four states shows how quickly a local strategy can redraw national norms.

What the laws target.

Most of the 2025 measures zero in on public facilities, healthcare, and legal recognition. Prison policies now bar transgender women from women’s wings in Mississippi, while Tennessee has cleared the way for teachers to misgender students. Several states have ruled that IDs may only carry birth‑assigned sex, a direct hit on everyday visibility.

Funding, flags and fallout.

Restrictions are spreading beyond legislatures. Pride organisers report sponsors pulling back, worried about backlash in an election season clouded by anti‑DEI rhetoric. Utah, Idaho and Montana have even outlawed Pride flags on some public buildings, forcing communities to find new ways to keep rainbow colours flying.

Will the onslaught stall once courts weigh in or will more governors sign copy‑and‑paste bills before November? Advocates say visibility remains the best defence. As trans campaigner Joelle Bayaa‑Uzuri Espeut told reporters, “We refuse to be erased.”
