The 2016 X Factor winner Matt Terry is stepping into the spotlight once again but this time with a newfound sense of pride and authenticity. After years of speculation about his sexuality, Matt is breaking his silence and embracing his truth.

Marking his choice to come out and discuss his sexuality, Terry has written and released a single called His Car with an accompanying music video.

Secrets, sexuality, sorries…

Terry has been suspected of being gay since X Factor launched him publicly. He discusses feeling too proud to discuss that private part of his life but, with introspection and time away from the spotlight, he’s finally prepared to let us in.

Speaking candidly with Gay Times, Matt says, “I am very proud of my sexuality and I am no longer afraid.” Aligning with his announcement, Terry has released a powerful ballad called His Car which he claims is a deeply personal apology to the first man he ever loved.

“This song is an apology to the first man I fell in love with because I asked a lot of him,” he says. “I said to him, ‘You’re not allowed to tell anyone about this,’ and he loved me enough to do so. Six, seven, years later, I realise that’s not something we should be doing, and it’s not something you should ask somebody.”

This kind of reflection isn’t uncommon among closeted folks, and some, like Terry, have the power to express this important experience with the world through art.

Terry has also since delivered a heartfelt message of gratitude to his followers in Instagram mentioning how supported he’s felt coming out. He makes an effort to also thank the LGBTQIA+ community saying, “I’ve been among you for a long time… I feel so welcome and it’s just been magical.”
