Welcome To 2023!
Happy New Year, from all of us at DNA. I’m feeling incredibly optimistic about 2023, especially after the challenges we’ve all faced over the last couple of years.
WorldPride is about to kick off in Sydney in February, and it promises to be a massive celebration like never before. There are countless parties and arts events planned, and a gay village will be created around the gay heartland of Darlinghurst with streets closed off to traffic. I’m looking forward to the party at Bondi Beach and the Pride March across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and just celebrating with my extended LGBTQIA+ family!
Even our couches are going to be exciting places to be in 2023 with some of our favourite TV shows coming back: Elite, Euphoria, Heartstopper, 9-1-1 Lone Star, The White Lotus, Young Royals, Queer Eye, Riverdale, and both RuPaul and Boulet Brothers drag franchises all renewed.
On the civil rights front, more South-East Asian countries are likely to edge towards some sort of marriage equality or relationship recognition following the progress made in Taiwan and Japan and, thankfully, the US Congress was able to protect marriage equality there before the Republicans take control of the House this year.
On December 15, Ukraine’s government unanimously passed legislation making LGBTQIA+ discrimination illegal. This is great, however, a Russian win in the war would see that progress reversed. The new far-right coalition government in Israel is also a concern as they intend to allow discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people on religious grounds. Local activists fear this could lead, for example, to medical professionals choosing not to treat gay, trans or queer patients.
