Boots is gone. No second season. And yes, that still stings. But if Angus O’Brien’s social media is anything to go by, he is doing just fine and looking better than ever.

The 30-year-old actor, best known for his role in the now-cancelled Netflix series Boots, has been steadily flooding timelines with shirtless mirror selfies. Fan reactions have been, let’s say, overwhelmingly positive.

The story behind the physique

O’Brien was already training long before Boots came along. But the real shift? Sobriety. In an interview with GQ, he was clear about it: “I’ve been working out for a long time, but I think I started to really get results after I got sober. I very much needed to get sober. The weight came on pretty quickly with that, because I had always been really good with the gym.”

He also had a professional advantage going in. Before acting, O’Brien worked as a personal trainer. He understands progressive overload, the practice of gradually increasing training demands over time to build strength and muscle, and structures his workouts accordingly. That foundation matters.

Sobriety, therapy, and yes, Dungeons and Dragons

In a heartfelt January Instagram post, O’Brien wrote about gratitude in a way that felt genuinely personal: “I’m grateful for unrelenting queerness in the face of everything, for being in love with the most amazing man in the world… I’m grateful for sobriety and therapy and weekly D&D sessions.”

It reads like someone who has done the real work. Not just in the gym.

He actually eats

What makes O’Brien’s approach refreshing is the absence of obsessive restriction. Talking to GQ, he said: “I just love eating, and I love eating savoury things.” His diet leans toward high-protein meals, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. The goal is balance, not deprivation.

On the selfies themselves, O’Brien has been candid about how his relationship with his body has changed. “When I was younger, I was always trying to prove something,” he said. “Now, I’m kind of just happy, chilling, and feeling the confidence that I have now.”
