Victoria Police Arrest 35 People Allegedly Using Gay Dating Apps To Target Men

Police Arrest Suspected Criminal (DNA/AI).

In Australia, Victoria Police have arrested 35 individuals allegedly involved in a crime network targeting men through dating apps, reports Star Observer. The arrests follow an eight-month investigation into violent attacks where perpetrators created fake profiles to lure victims.

The suspects, mostly males aged 13 to 20, allegedly used dating platforms to arrange meetings before assaulting, robbing and abusing victims. Some attacks were recorded and shared on social media.

“These incidents have occurred in various suburbs across Melbourne, including Manningham, Casey, Hume, Moorabbin and Knox,” Victoria Police confirmed.

Eastern Region Crime Team investigators have charged the individuals with armed robbery, false imprisonment, violent disorder, affray and causing injury.

Safety Warning Issued

Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Carolyn Deer stated: “There is absolutely no place for this type of concerning behaviour in our society. It will not be tolerated. Everyone has a right to go about their lives, meet new people and start a relationship in safety.”

When using dating apps, Superintendent Deer recommends users “always remain vigilant by protecting your identity and location and verifying the other person’s identity before meeting up.”

Police are working with dating app companies on safety measures but emphasise that victims should report incidents directly to police, as in-app reports do not trigger official investigations.

Community Response

Victoria’s LGBTQIA+ Commissioner Joe Ball expressed concern about the attacks.

“I’m heartbroken and angry to learn that another 22 men have been arrested in connection with targeted homophobic violence facilitated through a dating app,” Ball said. “These attacks are deliberate, organised, and hateful.”

Ball also spoke directly to affected communities: “To our communities: I see you, and I know how distressing this is. Many of us remember the days when violence against gay men was normalised, overlooked – even expected. We will not go back.”

Prevention Measures

Commissioner Ball is working with government agencies on new safety initiatives.

“The Minister for Equality, Vicki Ward, MP, and I are looking forward to exploring – with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission a community reporting tool to help track and respond to anti-LGBTQIA+ violence,” he explained.

Are you using dating apps? Police advise meeting in public places, telling friends about your plans and trusting your instincts.

Similar cases have been reported in Western Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. Victoria Police urge anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

“Your safety matters. We will keep fighting for a Victoria where all of us can live free from hate,” Ball concluded.
