DNA: Congratulations on the current success! Looks like it’s pop stardom full-time, then!

VASSY: I haven’t had a “real” job in a long time. A couple of my records went multi-platinum and generated great royalties and I ended up buying a place in LA. I write all my stuff, I’m also the artist and now I have doubled my revenue streams. I’ve had eight #1s on the US dance chart and I’m just a girl from Darwin! [Laughs].

Did you have to leave Australia to make it big overseas?

Absolutely. I found it so limiting here. I didn’t fit in a box. I wasn’t Delta Goodrem or Kylie Minogue. I wasn’t this cute blonde package Australia loves. My career was doing well, but I’m ambitious and wanted to be an international artist. I left and started all over again the US. I had a hit record with David Guetta, Bad, and then another huge record with Tiësto, which went to #1 in over 30 countries and now I’m back everyone wants to work with me. I had lunch with Dannii Minogue in Melbourne and that was fun. She’s very cool and so down to earth. It was sweet to hear that she’s a fan because I’m a fan of hers. We might have to do a record together – the queens of dance!

You’ve always had that powerhouse voice though!

I never thought so. I thought my voice was more of a Billie Holiday voice. I’ve started to get more comfortable with having a unique, emotive voice, and I can belt songs.

Us gays love the dance music! You must have a big gay following.

I’ve performed at so many Prides over the years in the US. I have a lot of support in the community. I started my career in the US because I was West Hollywood’s little darling there for a while, doing all the clubs with my dancers. It was such a cool time. I miss those days. It was family and it’s my world more than the straight world. I’ve just had these records that were huge in the EDM space and that’s a whole different scene, obviously.

You’ve also been heavily involved with the NoH8 campaign

I’ve been doing that for years, using my platform and my voice to represent communities, and give everyone a voice: equal rights should be given to everyone. My speciality is doing music workshops and mentoring kids trying to come out and having difficulties because of cultural backgrounds and their families not accepting them being gay. I want to do something bigger with that and have this ability to empower people and make them feel good about themselves. My best friend came out when he was 14 and I supported him, even though it was hard. I was always there, even from a young age.

What’s your message to your gay fan base and the readers of DNA?

Continue to scream out loud and celebrate life because it’s a great time right now. Thank you for embracing me. You guys are family and I love you all. Seriously, I’m always down to do whatever I can do to represent the community. It makes me feel like I’m their daughter and part of the family.

We like our sassy VASSY!

Well, I have that side, too. If you don’t like it you can kiss my vassy! [Laughs].
