UK Nurse Clinches Mr Gay World 2024 Crown: A Win For Trans Rights

John Bench Ortiz (PH), Paul Carruthers (UK) And Poosit Changkaewmanee (Thailand)

Paul Carruthers, a 42-year-old nurse from Leeds, won Mr Gay World 2024 on 26 August. The event took place at The Alnwick Garden in Northumberland, England. This was the first time the UK hosted the contest in its 15-year history.

“I’m shocked and honored,” Carruthers said. “Being chosen from such an amazing group of men is incredible.”

The five-day contest included mental, written, social media, and physical tasks. He and 10 participants also joined events in Durham, Tyneside, and Northumberland. These included a Pride Parade and a meeting with local officials.

Carruthers plans to use his title to support key issues. “I want to push for same-sex adoption rights globally,” he said. “But my main focus is on trans rights and healthcare, especially for young people. Trans voices matter.”

With nearly ten years in healthcare, Carruthers aims to use his skills as a new platform for change. “Trans people face a lot of hate right now,” he noted. “We need to stand together and protect their rights and safety.”

Carruthers is a dad to two boys. He enjoys cycling and watching reality TV in his free time. In the contest, he won the Written Exam and Formal Wear categories. He also got the most online votes from the public.

John Bench Ortiz from the Philippines came second. Poosit Changkaewmanee from Thailand was third. Karabo Enock Morake (Germany) and Damian Kutryb (Poland) rounded out the top five.

Other winners included:

  • Luc de Muelenaere (South Africa): Sports Challenge
  • Poosit Changkaewmanee (Thailand): Social Responsibility Campaign
  • Karabo Enock Morake (Germany): Swimwear and Personal Interview
  • John Bench Ortiz (Philippines): National Costume and Social Media Presence

Mr Gay World started in 2009 in Canada. It aims to bring gay men together to show diversity, leadership, and talk about global issues.
