Tyler Oakley Opens Up About Mental Health Struggle
Tyler Oakley began his career in the early days of YouTube’s history by posting relatable and comedic vlogs. Since 2007, Oakley’s charismatic charm and upbeat personality has entertained millions of subscribers and fans but in a new interview, the social media star has shared his vulnerable story about battling depression, reports Advocate.
Mental health can impact anyone
With millions of loyal followers, Oakley recounts feeling like everything in his life was going well but he was unable to escape feelings of hopelessness. “I am living the life that I really wanted to have, yet I am on this plane hoping it crashes,” he says.
Struggling with depression is something the former YouTube star has shared openly with his fans. Mental health issues reportedly run in Oakley’s family and he speaks about his healing process bringing him closer with his mother.
Research released by Headspace reveals that one in three young people seeking support for mental health-related issues identify as LGBTQIA+. There is no shame in asking for help and there are resources available. Oakley speaks about finding his own rhythm in treatment and about how important it is to tailor your care to your needs.
“Every mental health issue is so unique to the person going through it. It’s impacted by race and sexual orientation and how they navigate the world. So, for anyone thinking there’s a one-size-fits-all solution, that’s not true,” says Oakley.
